Empowering Millions: Designing the Digital Wayfinding for Hamburg’s New U5
Mobility should not only move people; it should empower them. This week at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Hamburg, the Edenspiekermann team sat down with long-time partners to explore the future of urban transit.
Since 2020, we have been proud to support Hamburger Hochbahn AG in shaping the digital wayfinding system for the new U5 subway line—one of Europe’s most ambitious urban mobility projects. As an entirely new, fully autonomous line, the U5 requires more than just signs; it requires a seamless, intuitive, and inclusive guidance system that bridges the gap between digital and physical touchpoints.
Working alongside experts from Alstom and BLIC, our focus is on the "hard work in the background"—the invisible design and engineering that make a passenger's journey feel effortless.
Key Takeaways from UITP 2025:
Intuition by Design: Creating future-proof guidance for millions of diverse passengers.
Inclusive Mobility: Ensuring autonomous transit is accessible and empowering for everyone.
Collaboration is Key: Rethinking public infrastructure requires a tight-knit ecosystem of design, engineering, and visionary clients.
A New Era of Mobility
The U5 project is not a sprint, but a marathon. As Hamburg’s first fully automated subway line moves from vision to reality, we continue to refine the digital interfaces that will soon guide millions of people. There is still much happening behind the scenes to make public transport as seamless and inclusive as possible—and we look forward to sharing the next stages of this journey with you. Stay tuned.
