Design Consultancy Edenspiekermann wins the Hamburger Hochbahn AG budget for the development of a digital passenger information system (in German: Fahrgastinformationssystems/FIS) for the new underground line U5. The Berlin design consultancy won the call for the innovation project with its convincing concept. The project has already started and is expected to be completed in spring 2021. Strengthening their competence in mobility, this project is lead by Senior Service Designer Johanna Auferkamp, an expert with 7 years of experience in working for public transport.

With the construction of the U5 line, Hamburg will have a new main traffic artery. The FIS for the new line must offer much more than just timetable information. Rather, it should enable public transport passengers to access the diverse, sustainable mobility solutions of Smart City Hamburg quickly, easily, and intuitively.

The concept from Edenspiekermann sees various formats and communication media, which can be used in combination for every user to create an intelligently networked mobility experience. To develop the best solutions, a deep understanding of the behavior, motivations, and preferences of today’s and tomorrow’s future customers, is necessary. The special challenge: the DT6 rail vehicle series is currently still under development. A «live testing» can therefore not take place. That is why Edenspiekermann relies on its own VR application, with the help of which the FIS is already in the development phase and can be realistically tested and validated.

«We consider the FIS to be one of the central building blocks to create a digital and sustainable mobility of the future in Hamburg», explains Christian Hanke, Managing Director, and Partner at Edenspiekermann. «We are delighted that we were able to attract the Hamburger Hochbahn and can now help them to move away from the public transport operator to an integrated mobility service provider».
