The press and the police force: the two are inextricably linked. How did the police force deal with the problems and how did the press cover them? Did the press influence the police or was the police in a position to make use of the press?

The most notorious incidents of the 19th and 20th centuries are showcased in this exhibition, featuring documents of the Press Museum and the Amsterdam City Archives. Like unsolved cases such as the murder of Magere Josje (Skinny Josje), the protests surrounding the coronation in 1980 and the racism surrounding the pre-WWII ‘negro cabarets’. All themes that are still relevant today.

Barrier tape, gates with black cloth and white sheets capture the imagination the most. They emphasize the tension between the work fields of the Press and the Police Force.

The exhibition was curated by the Press Museum and Amsterdam City Archives.
