The Design Interns Run Wild

Our designers spend a lot of time working digitally. It’s 2016, it’s kind of inevitable. But a couple of weeks ago our design interns disappeared, leaving lonely iMacs and an eerie quiet. They hadn’t gone far, though. Across the street at p98a they were getting a masterclass in printing from Erik Spiekermann and the team at his workshop. Here we take a look behind the scenes and see the finished results of their printing and experimenting.

For most of our interns it was their first time trying out letterpress printing, and who better to show them the ropes than Erik and the p98a team.

After choosing their slogans, rolling up their sleeves and donning some very practical aprons (not usually a requirement when you’re working with computers) they got to work, getting tips and guidance from the experts.

Here’s what Disha and Tom thought (spot the pun):

“It was great getting to experiment with colors, techniques, and typefaces. It was a bit like a playground, we just got to try things out.” — Disha

“I never realized how difficult it would be; there are so many tiny details that go into it, it’s so complicated. But it was great to spend the day away from a screen, working with my hands. It was just my type of day out.” — Tom

Thank to Norman Posselt for the great photos of the workshop.

And finally, here’s one that definitely wasn’t taken by Norman:
